Carrying basket | Naga-tribes

In the north-east of India, along the border with Burma, lies Nagaland, home to many different Naga tribes. The Naga people live in an impenetrable area. They have largely managed to preserve their centuries-old culture to this day.

Picking and carrying baskets; wickerwork, reed/bark, mid-20th century
Such baskets were used in daily work for picking and transporting the harvest, but also for transporting wood, for example. The basket was carried on the back with the carrying strap around the forehead. Because all household goods – including the baskets – were hung from the ceiling in smoky huts, they have acquired a characteristic dark colour.
